<image:title>BLOG - November’s Reads - 4.8/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>This book was everything I could want in a read yet wasn’t anything I’d expected it to be. I loved the main character along with his many quirks because I can easily relate considering I have a laundry list of my own. My reading experience had me gasping, giggling, cryin, all while trying to put the pieces together. Hands down my favorite genre to read is mystery/suspense because it always keeps me turning to the next page and this book was no exception. Favorite Quotes: “Sometimes we get sad about things and we don't like to tell other people that we are sad about them. We like to keep it a secret. Or sometimes, we are sad but we really don't know why we are sad, so we say we aren't sad but we really are.” “Lots of things are mysteries. But that doesn't mean there isn't an answer to them. It's just that scientists haven't found the answer yet.” “I do not like strangers because I do not like people I have never met before. They are hard to understand.” “In life, you have to take lots of decisions and if you don't take decisions you would never do anything because you would spend all your time choosing between things you could do.” “And then I thought that I had to be like Sherlock Holmes and I had to detach my mind at will to a remarkable degree so that I did not notice how much it was hurting inside my head.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - November’s Reads - 4.5/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>This inspiring read brought me back in time to reminisce about my childhood, family relationships, the different states we moved to, and the different homes we lived in. I enjoyed that my family read this book with me as a part of Bibliotherapy Book Club. The opportunity to discuss how our memories differed was not only interesting but revealing in what makes each of us who we are today. This story also brought me back to an idea I often mull over, which is that things rarely happen overnight. Whether it’s building a family, creating relationships, gaining knowledge, establishing a career, improving our health, constructing a gardening, developing skills, or change it’ll take time, and that’s okay. Favorite Quotes : “Do you think it’s possible to ever see the past as it actually was?” “There are a few times in life when you leap up and the past that you'd been standing on falls away behind you, and the future you mean to land on is not yet in place, and for a moment you're suspended knowing nothing and no one, not even yourself.” “Disappointment comes from expectation,” "But we overlay the present onto the past. We look back through the lens of what we know now, so we're not seeing it as the people we were, we're seeing it as the people we are, and that means the past has been radically altered.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - November’s Reads - 4.0/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>I read through this book twice, it was so fascinating yet short. If you need a brisk read or you’re someone who falls asleep easily when they cuddle up with a book this could be a good read for you! Set in the 19th century, this book is written from the perspective of a narrator suffering from postpartum depression. She secretly writes in a journal as she slowly descends into a breakdown while following a rest cure that her husband (a prominent doctor) prescribed. The most interesting part for me was that it centered around how she saw her situation of feeling trapped come alive within the patterned wallpaper. Favorite Quotes: “But the effort is getting to be greater than the relief.” “You think you have mastered it, but just as you get well under way in following, it turns a back somersault, and there you are. It slaps you in the face, knocks you down, and tramples upon you. It is like a bad dream.” “John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no REASON to suffer, and that satisfies him. “He says no one but myself can help me out of it, that I must use my will and self-control and not let any silly fancies run away with me.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - November’s Reads - 4.8/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>When I previously traveled around the country weekly for work, my husband and I would listen to or read the same books as something to do together while apart. This was one of the first reads that got us started on that habit but with the excitement of Ready Player Two being released on November 24th I had to revisit this book. This story has a little bit of everything from action, romance, mystery, and sarcastic humor. Plus, I love anything dystopian future, 80’s, and I’m a total nerd that enjoys gaming so this read is always right up my alley! Favorite Quotes : “Whenever I saw the sun, I reminded myself that I was looking at a star. One of over a hundred billion in our galaxy. A galaxy that was just one of billions of other galaxies in the observable universe. This helped me keep things in perspective.” “So now the polar ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, and the weather is all messed up. Plants and animals are dying off in record numbers, and lots of people are starving and homeless. And we’re still fighting wars with each other, mostly over the few resources we have left.” “Because there is no map for where we are going” “That was what saved me, I think. Suddenly I’d found something worth doing. A dream worth chasing. For the last five years, the Hunt had given me a goal and purpose. A quest to fulfill. A reason to get up in the morning. Something to look forward to.” “No one in the world gets what they want and that is beautiful.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - October’s Reads - 10/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>This read on the other hand helped to lift me out of that funk a bit. I’ve never felt so comfortable and in a way, at home with an author’s writing. I felt like I was sitting with an old friend that knew exactly what to say that’d give me a new perspective while inspiring a more optimistic outlook on the future. I believe that there are many points in life where we think we’re the only ones going through something, who’ve felt a certain way, or considered different choices. The Midnight Library has a great way of guiding you through the protagonist’s life while helping you appreciate your own. Favorite Quotes: “You’re overthinking it.’ ‘I have anxiety. I have no other type of thinking available.” “We only need to be one person. We only need to feel one existence. We don't have to do everything in order to be everything, because we are already infinite. While we are alive we always contain a future of multifarious possibility.” “So you see? Sometimes regrets aren’t based on fact at all. Sometimes regrets are just…She searched for the appropriate term and found it. ‘A load of bullshit’ ” “If you aim to be something you are not, you will always fail. Aim to be you. Aim to look and act and think like you. Aim to be the truest version of you. Embrace that you-ness. Endorse it. Love it. Work hard at it. And don't give a second thought when people mock it or ridicule it. Most gossip is envy in disguise.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - October’s Reads - 3.8/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>This read put me in a bit of a funk having to take a hard look at my own beliefs regarding topics of motherhood, community, race, identity, and regret. The author smacks you with a dose of reality that you’ve always known yet isn’t simple to accept in all situations. That reality for me was that not everything is black and white, sometimes there isn’t a right or wrong way, and not everyone always agrees which can muddy the water. That muddy water is good though, regardless of how difficult it can be to wade through. We should question ourselves, our actions, our intentions, and values. I understand what the author was trying to do with some pieces of the ending being left untied. That was something that frustrated me about this read though and is why I ranked it below a 4. But, if you enjoy imagining different endings after a read this is the one for you! Favorite Quotes : “He felt as if he’d dived into a deep, clear lake and discovered it was a shallow, knee-deep pond. What did you do? Well, you stood up. You rinsed your mud-caked knees and pulled your feet out of the muck. And you were more cautious after that. You knew, from then on, that the world was a smaller place than you’d expected.” “Sometimes you need to scorch everything to the ground and start over. After the burning the soil is richer, and new things can grow. People are like that, too. They start over. They find a way.” “Most of the time, everyone deserves more than one chance. We all do things we regret now and then. You just have to carry them with you.” “It bothers you, doesn’t it?” Mia said suddenly. “I think you can’t imagine. Why anyone would choose a different life from the one you’ve got. Why anyone might want something other than a big house with a big lawn, a fancy car, a job in an office. Why anyone would choose anything different than what you’d choose.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - September’s Reads - 4.0/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>This was one we voted on for Bibliotherapy Book Club. It’s nothing and everything I expected the read to be. It delivered the insight of others but not in the way I’m accustomed to from this author. This was good for a few laughs, some terrifying twists and for some much needed reflection on what we want out of life. Favorite Quotes: “Sometimes your life changes so slowly and imperceptibly that you don't notice it at all until one day you wake up and think, 'How did I get here?' But other times, life changes in an instant with a lightning stroke of good or bad luck with glorious or tragic consequences.” “This was rock bottom, I just licked a Kit Kat wrapper”………..”She seemed to be losing her sense of self, come on now get a grip, you’re too old for an existential crisis.” “Journeys continued as they applied Marsha’s lessons to their day to day lives. Then 2, 3, 4 years later a good proportion came back to Tanquilliam House looking as unhealthy as they have been or even more unhealthy”…..”Marsha had only reset them temporarily in times of crisis they returned to their default setting.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - September’s Reads - 4.7/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>Even if you’re not a parent this book will move your soul and tug at each heart string as you read this father’s letter to his son. The title of this book fits perfectly for the understanding it provides on the distance race can create between the world. This book providing answers to questions and an understanding I had been seeking about race, was likely the reason I somehow finished this read within a day. I can assure you, finishing a book in a day has NEVER happened to me. I’m the slowest reader on the planet so if that doesn’t speak volumes and make you wanna carve out a little reading time keep scrolling for some further inspiration. Favorite Quotes: “My work is to give you what I know of my own particular path while allowing you to walk your own.” “You have been cast into a race in which the wind is always at your face and the hounds are always at your heels. And to varying degrees this is true of all life. The difference is that you do not have the privilege of living in ignorance of this essential fact.” “And I too felt bound by my ignorance, by the questions that I had not yet understood to be more than just means, by my lack of understanding, and by Howard itself. It was still a school, after all. I wanted to pursue things, to know things, but I could not match the means of knowing that came naturally to me with the expectations of professors. The pursuit of knowing was freedom to me, the right to declare your own curiosities and follow them through all manner of books. I was made for the library, not the classroom. The classroom was a jail of other people’s interests. The library was open, unending, free. Slowly, I was discovering myself.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - September’s Reads - 4.5/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>Although this book is a Young Adult, it was well worth the read on topics we face as adults. It was also a good way to see how gender, race, sexuality, and environment shape our biases from a younger age than most of us tend to consider. It also addresses death, illness, homophobia, mental illness and if you’re anything like I was how awkward those high school years can be. My favorite part about this book is the inspiration that it provides that one person can effect change, especially when you gain the courage to ask for support from others. Favorite Quotes: “The thing about anxiety is that it looks different for everyone. I mean, yeah, of course there are some threads that run through all of us that mark us as, you know, anxious people: being restless, exhausted, just plain fidgety. But it’s the nuances that change the game.” “Everything is so much more magnificent and complicated than I had initially budgeted for.” “Just because it could be worse doesn't mean you don't get to acknowledge how much it sucks, you know.”</image:caption>

<image:title>BLOG - September’s Reads - 5/5 goodreads Summary</image:title>
<image:caption>I fell in love with this author when I read “How to Be an Anti-Racist” back in 2019. I then came across this read when I had been specifically seeking information that gave me a better factual understanding of race. I wanted to gain the ability to communicate the anti-racist points I’d previously learned in a logical rather than emotional manner. If you’re seeking any historical facts for better understanding how the ideas of race were built and have progressed throughout time, this read is for you. Favorite Quotes: ““When men oppress their fellow-men, the oppressor ever finds, in the character of the oppressed, a full justification for his oppression.” Douglass, amazingly, summed up the history of racist ideas in a single sentence.” “Whenever a Black person or group used White people as a standard of measurement, and cast another Black person or group as inferior, it was another instance of racism.” “I was taught the popular folktale of racism: that ignorant and hateful people had produced racist ideas, and that these racist people had instituted racist policies. But when I learned the motives behind the production of many of America’s most influentially racist ideas, it became quite obvious that this folktale, though sensible, was not based on a firm footing of historical evidence. Ignorance/hate >> racist ideas>> discrimination: this causal relationship is largely ahistorical. It has actually been the inverse relationship—racial discrimination led to racist ideas which led to ignorance and hate. Racial discrimination>>racist ideas>> ignorance/hate: this is the causal relationship driving America’s history of race relations.”</image:caption>
